bikram yoga
It’s been awhile. The last time I did Bikram Yoga was over 6 months ago, right before I started developing my rashes. Then I got married, then the holidays came, and before I knew it… Bikram and I had become strangers.
I decided to go today after hours of studying. I was restless, the weather outside was perfect (crisp, cold, and gloomy), and I had been missing yoga for awhile. I looked at the online schedule and didn’t recognize half of the teachers’ names. So much can change in just half a year! It was a risk having to try a new teacher my first time back – if you think all teachers are created equal, I’m here to break that illusion and tell you NO, they are definitely not.
Luckily, my teacher today was amazing. Better than amazing. She had a soothing voice, was very helpful, encouraged me throughout the class, and couldn’t be funnier. Yes, Bikram can be fun (and funny).
As for me… I wanted to die halfway into the balancing series. We were barely at balancing stick pose and I already had to sit out a few times. The heat was getting to me. My stomach felt nauseous. My head was lightheaded. I felt the onset of a Migraine. I did not feel good.
But I got through it. I even got myself to do the triangle and tree to toe stand poses. No easy feat I tell ya. Once the floor series started I stopped thinking about the lightheadedness and just let my body bend and breathe the way it needed to.
It felt like the longest hour and a half of my life, but I got through it with dignity. At the end of it, my teacher even called me a superstar! I don’t know when I’ll be back, but for today I just want to relish in this accomplishment. Now back to studying.

bikram yoga, fixed firm pose, hot yoga

It was just one of them days. I stupidly slept at 2:30am last night and got in only 4 hours of sleep. I was debating about yoga, but had a hunch that getting my lazy butt there would make me feel better in the end. So I went. I was drowsy and had a headache (not the way you want to start a class), so I popped in an Advil to remedy the issue. I do that from time to time, especially when I get headaches. They say that an Aspirin a day is actually good for your health, but there are so many health claims out there… you can never be too sure.

bikram yoga, Hatha Yoga, Yoga and Pilates

When I signed up online for today’s yoga class, I was pleasantly surprised to find my favorite teacher, Valerie, teaching again! She usually doesn’t teach on Mondays. I’ve been trying to come to class earlier because I’ve found that it starts the class off right – I’m never rushing to get there and it gives me time to adjust to the heat. Even though I got to class 15 minutes before start time, it was already halfway filled and almost every spot in the back row had been taken (I got the last spot, whew!).

bikram yoga, Eagle Pose, Rabbit Pose, Yoga and Pilates

So I just showered, then made myself some lunch after my morning Bikram Yoga class. Today was a great Bikram Yoga day. I got there 20 minutes early so was only the 2nd person in the room. I laid out my mat to reserve an optimal spot in the back of the room, then went back outside to chat it up with my favorite instructor. By the way, when you guys choose your spots, do you usually gravitate towards the same general area? If I could, I would probably stick to the same exact spot every single time – what can I say, I’m a creature of habit, so sometimes moving to a spot across the room makes me a bit disoriented.

bikram yoga

Amazing, amazing, amaaaaazing! That’s the only thing that ran through my head this morning as I finished my first Bikram Yoga class in a long while. When I said I was in a “slump”, I wasn’t kidding – its been over a month since I last went. When I entered the heated room and laid down in Savasana (Corpse Pose) waiting for class to begin, all I could think about was how much I missed this.

bikram yoga

I still recall my first month with Bikram Yoga – it was like I discovered a new drug – I needed it and wanted it all the time. I came home feeling refreshed, energized, yet calm. As the weeks went by, however, I found myself not looking as forward to the practice, dreading having to do the same 26 poses and “going through the motions” again in 105 degree heat. I would look forward to the way my heart rate would rise throughout the class, but now I no longer hear the “thump thump thump” sound of exertion coming from my chest that thrilled me so.

bikram yoga, lock the knee, unemployment

I only ask because there’s this one pose in Bikram Yoga that I thought I’d never get down. I’m not talking about any of the balancing poses either because at least I expect those to be tough! The pose I’m talking about is actually the simple “Sit-Up” pose. My problem is not the sitting up part, my problem is the pulling your toes up until your heel is no longer touching the ground.

bikram yoga, lock the knee, quadriceps, Yoga and Pilates, yoga injuries

How many of us have heard that phrase before???
For those of you who have practiced Bikram Yoga at least once or twice, you’re probably familiar with the phrase “lock the knee lock the knee lock the knee!”. Locking the knee does NOT mean locking your knee so hard that it hyperextends and protrudes backwards. So what exactly is the proper way of “locking the knee” and what is the purpose and benefit of us doing so?

bikram choudhury, bikram yoga, franchising

Bikram Choudhury, the man who founded Bikram Yoga, is highly controversial because he decided to copyright the 26 different positions performed in Bikram Yoga. In order to become a certified “Bikram Yoga” instructor you must pay a $5000 fee to take his courses and then pay a franchising fee to open your own studio. Once you open your own studio you MUST abide by these specific guidelines: (more…)

26 postures, bikram yoga, health benefits, Yoga and Pilates

I’ve been looking everywhere for a good website that provides detailed information on the poses and their benefits. I finally found what I was looking for on the Bikram Yoga Seattle website. Check it out! Roll your mouse over each of the poses, and then the description and health benefits of each pose will pop up on the left hand column. Enjoy!
