Amazing, amazing, amaaaaazing!  That’s the only thing that ran through my head this morning as I finished my first Bikram Yoga class in a long while.  When I said I was in a “slump”, I wasn’t kidding – its been over a month since I last went.  When I entered the heated room and laid down in Savasana (Corpse Pose) waiting for class to begin, all I could think about was how much I missed this.

It was as if the stars were aligned today – my favorite instructor just so happened to be teaching at the time I wanted to go.  The class size was half its usual size so there was plenty of space to practice, and I just felt hydrated and energized going into today’s class.

The first couple poses went by, and I thought, “I got this”, but that thought quickly disappeared as I entered “standing head to knee pose”, where they have you lock one knee, stretch out your other leg and hold it out in front of you at a 90 degree angle.  I was sweating buckets, and the class was barely 1/3 over.  I didn’t give up.  In fact, today I was more determined than ever to hold that pose and bring it to completion.  That thought continued throughout class.  Every time I wanted to stop, @ilovesweat‘s comment echoed in my head, “treat every class like it’s your first”.  So I did.

I went into Bikram Yoga today thinking it would be incredibly difficult because I haven’t kept up with the practice, but our muscles and our minds are strangely resilient.  My body was not as flexible as it was last month, nor was my spine as limber, but in no way was I back at square one.  The balance I had attained was still there.  The ability to rest with my eyes open and breathe with my mouth closed came like second nature.  After today’s class, I’d like to say, “I’m back Bikram!”

And I’ll be back tomorrow!

Welcome back to the hot room! Your body always knows what’s right for it, doesn’t it feel like welcoming back a long lost friend?

Take it from me – everyday for the next 60 days and you’ll be on top of the world :)
