ezekiel-bread

One bread I’ve fallen in love with in recent years is Ezekial 4:9 bread.  If it’s good enough for Oprah, it’s good enough for me!  I used to frown upon this conspicuous little loaf whenever I passed it on the bread aisle, opting for softer and easier to pronounce brands (Sara Lee anyone?).  What was I thinking?  I love this bread when it’s toasted – so nutty and dense!

The name of this bread, Ezekial 4:9, is actually taken from the bible, “Take also unto thee Wheat, and Barley, and beans, and lentils, and millet, and Spelt, and put them in one vessel, and make bread of it”.  I have to say, the makers certainly succeeded in literally taking the words of scripture and bringing it to life!

Here’s what they have to say about this delicious bread of theirs:

Ezekiel 4:9® Organic Sprouted Whole Grain Products are:

  • Flourless,
  • Organic,
  • Complete Protein,
  • and Sprouted Whole Grain

We discovered when these six grains and legumes are sprouted and combined, an amazing thing happens. A complete protein is created that closely parallels the protein found in milk and eggs. In fact, the protein quality is so high, that it is 84.3% as efficient as the highest recognized source of protein, containing all 9 essential amino acids. There are 18 amino acids present in this unique bread – from all vegetable sources – naturally balanced in nature.

Many diabetics swear by this bread, helping them regulate their blood sugar levels.  But this is also a great option for bread lovers wanting to cut back on their carb intake and replacing it with some high quality vegetarian protein.  Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too?

You can even make this bread yourself – http://www.squidoo.com/ezekielbread – seems a bit tedious to me, but if you do try it let me know how it turned out!  :)

I really wanted to like Ezekiel bread because it’s supposed to be so healthy, but I think it smells funny. I find it edible if it’s toasted and covered with butter or peanut butter + honey, but I would never eat it untoasted. There is a vegan bakery here in Seattle and I think all of their baked goods smell funny, too. I think it might be the spelt.

I could NEVER eat ezekial bread without toasting it first! I think that’s what surprised me the most when I first ate it toasted – it was soo good and makes a huge difference. The slices are small, but because it’s so dense it keeps me fuller longer. I like to eat mine with some peanut butter and overeasy egg. The yolk from the egg drips onto the bread for absolute deliciousness.
