“Above all… breathe correctly”
- Joseph Pilates
Breath is the key to pilates.
Pilates was founded by a man named Joseph Pilates, and is now the exercise of choice for many dancers and celebrities. Joseph Pilates first started his pilates program back in World War II as a way to rehabilitate injured soldiers through the use of gentle strengthening and stabilizing exercises.
It’s hard to believe, but Pilates is a system of over 500 exercises that work to engage your center through controlled movements coupled with precise breathing. The exercises serve to develop long, lean muscles as opposed to short, bulky muscles… making it an ideal exercise for many people looking for a more “toned” look. The foundation of these exercises is a focus on the powerhouse or “core” muscles. The core is the bundle of muscles hugging your waist and back, enabling you to have a stronger center and improved posture.
